Preserving the Region's Quality of Life
The quality of life in Berkshire County is unsurpassed. The area has succeeded in providing a healthy work and leisure time environment for its people. Tourism is a successful industry because visitors can experience the same activities enjoyed by residents, from hiking and nature walks in the Berkshire Mountains to the sounds of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood. The area offers a wide variety of performing arts, sporting events, scenic parks and panoramic vistas-in all four seasons of the year.
The Pittsfield Municipal Airport not only welcomes visitors, it also provides residents with quality employment and the financial ability to enjoy these same amenities with family and friends.
Pittsfield has a diverse economic base, providing jobs in the manufacturing, health care, education and visitor services industries. Pittsfield's industrial base has earned it the reference as the "Plastics Technology Center of the Nation". More than 40 area firms, including G.E. Plastics, work together through Berkshire Plastics Network, representing every discipline in the production of plastics and its components. The Pittsfield Municipal Airport is a critical "tool" for these companies and has been an important catalyst in the region's economic development.
Protecting the Environment
The Airport appreciates the importance of the area's natural environment and is aggressively working on a number of fronts to preserve its high quality. To guard against soil and water contamination, oil/water separators are built into paved areas. HAZMAT procedures are in place, and fuel tank upgrades are in progress. Procedures for the safe handling of fuel and maintenance products have been adopted. The Airport is working to protect its surroundings by operating the facility in peaceful coexistence with nature.
Preserving Open Space
The Airport preserves almost 200 acres of natural open space. Wildlife benefit from meadowseed planting and ongoing efforts to maintain the undeveloped character of the abutting lands, allowing wildlife to flourish in their natural habitat. In preserving the natural beauty of the Berkshires, the Pittsfield Municipal Airport is ensuring both the safety of air travelers and the preservation of plant and animal life.
Public Health and Safety
The Airport is available, 24 hours per day, for emergency medical transport. With specialized medical centers available in Boston, Worcester and New York, these air ambulance services can provide timely, life saving access to these facilities. A well-maintained airport will ensure that Pittsfield area residents can access these critical, medical services as quickly as humanly possible.
